Thursday Night Open Art Studio for Phoenix Youth

Building resiliency through art

For many youth, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has become an inspiring and safe environment where they can creatively participate in various art experiences. Since 2001, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has collaborated with Phoenix Youth Programs, a non-profit community-based organization in Halifax for at-risk and homeless youth between 12 and 24 years of age, to provide the Thursday Night Open Art Studio.

Every Thursday evening, young people meet at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia for a light dinner and drop-in studio program facilitated by artist Heather Wilkinson, a staff member from Phoenix Youth Programs, and volunteers. Throughout the evening, young people are engaged in an eclectic mix of art making ranging from the use of traditional processes and materials, to the more non-traditional and experimental. This program affords opportunities for youth to build resiliency and confidence by developing both artistic and social skills in a relaxed and inspiring learning environment.
