Michle de Broin

Born 1970, Montréal, QC

Michel de Broin received a BFA from Concordia University in 1995 and an MFA from the Université de Québec à Montréal in 1997. Since 1993, significance in Michel de Broin's work lays on recognizable patterns of experience. Such borrowings from art history, allusions to social mores are not ends in themselves, rather, they produce contexts likely to prompt semantic reversals, transformations that seem to accept constructed identities only to turn them inside out like a glove through a metaphorical process potentially open. Through multiple forms and means of expression, de Broin puts irony to work in a strategy by which he first examines the possible conditions of a given context, then posits an absolute, and finally, invents an unprecedented outcome.

His solo shows have been exhibited at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Galerie Isabella Bortolezzi, Berlin; BF15, Lyon; Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain, Montréal; La Vitrine, Paris; and Bahnwaterhaus, Esslingen, Allemagne.

He has been part of group exhibitions at Haus Am Waldsee, Berlin; Espace VOX, Montréal; Buia Gallery New York City; Fototeka, Havana; 11ème Biennale des Arts Visuelles, Pancevo, Serbie et Montenegro; Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art, Toronto; Galerie Nationale, Sofia; Galerie de l’UQAM, Montréal; and the Galerie du Centre Saidye Bronfman, Montréal.  His work is part of the public collections of the National Gallery of Canada; Villa Merkel, Essligen, Germany; Cirque du Soleil, Montreal; Banque d’œuvre du Canada, Ottawa; Musée du Québec; Ville de Montréal. Michel de Broin is represented by Galerie Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain in Montreal.
