The Sobey Art Award 2004 National Tour opens at the Yukon Arts Centre, Whitehorse

March 30, 2005 -- Halifax-- The Sobey Art Foundation, Scotiabank and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia are pleased to announce the launch of the 2004 Sobey Art Award Exhibition Tour.

The exhibit, featuring works by the 5 artists selected for the Sobey Art Award national short-list, opened at the Yukon Arts Centre on March 17th, 2005. The Sobey Art Award Exhibition will travel across the country in 2005 and 2006 presenting works by Marcel Dzama (Prairies and the North), Greg Forrest (Atlantic), Germaine Koh (Ontario), Althea Thauberger (West Coast) and the winner of the 2004 Sobey Art Award, Jean-Pierre Gauthier (Quebec). This year marks the first national tour of the Sobey Art Award, made possible by presenting sponsor Scotiabank.

The opening event was a smashing success, with many people attending from the Whitehorse community. It opened concurrently with 2 other exhibitions: Mark Porter: a retrospective, which tributes the talent of the promising First Nation Yukon artist whose life was tragically cut short; and Barbara Astman: Clementine Part 1, contemporary photographic work by the Toronto-based artist. The exhibitions continue to May 15th. For more information go to www.yukonartscentre.org.

Donald Sobey of the Sobey Art Foundation, Doug Janzen from Scotiabank's Whitehorse branch, and Ray Cronin, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia were in attendance to address the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and to give opening remarks. As well, artists Jean-Pierrre Gauthier, Althea Thauberger and Greg Forrest were on hand to introduce the exhibition and to chat with gallery visitors.
