In 2002, the Sobey Art Foundation created the most pre-eminent art award for a young Canadian artist. The Sobey Art Award is a biennial award given to an artist under 40 who has had a show in a public or commercial art gallery 18 months prior to the award. A panel of curatorial advisors, one from a major gallery in each of five regions will decide the winner: the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies and the North, the West Coast. Each advisor is charged with creating a shortlist of five artists from their respective regions. The five panelists will meet as a group in Halifax, during the spring of 2006 and reduce the national long list of 25 artists, to a short list of five. The panel of curatorial advisors will choose the winner in Autumn 2006.
Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal will host the 2006 Sobey Art Award. The exhibition, featuring works by the five artists selected for the Sobey Art Award national short-list, will open on October 25th at the Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal.
The announcement will be made during a reception at the Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal in November 2006. The winner will receive a cash prize of $50,000
