Halifax NS- Nocturne’s
free 48 page full-color program/map hits circulation this coming week all over
Halifax. The program contains listings for 32 Galleries staying open late with
special programming, 39 Independent Projects installed in public spaces for one
night only, and a variety of activities planned for the night of October 17th.
Artists
have come together in collaborations that celebrate and show the spirit of the
art community in Halifax. There’s something for everyone to enjoy with projects
that are interactive, entertaining, and thought provoking.
The
downtown area will of course be a hot spot once again with so many galleries in
close proximity. AGNS will present numerous exhibitions in and outside the
gallery with performances by Michael Fernandes, Mitchell Wiebe and Graeme
Patterson. The print team Yo Rodeo! is back at Arglye Fine Art, and the Khyber
will also host multiple exhibitions including the addition of a performance in
Grand Parade.
There
is also a lot of video based work and projections to fill the walls and windows
of the downtown business district. Favorites from last year, Scott Saunders,
Nickolai Gauer, and Wes Johnson present Tides
Comin' in... a projection and sound installation which provides a close-up
perspective of the incoming tides. Maritime Museum of the Atlantic also joins
in the action projecting their collection of ship portrait paintings on their
building’s exterior.
Take
the ferry and you will be greeted by a whimsical array of art and performance
on the Dartmouth side. At Alderney Landing there’s large scale haunted
sculptures, storytelling, and Atlantic Cirque performing aerial dancing, Also
worth a short walk down the street is Leola Leblanc’s Perpetuel an eerie audio installation in the Geary St. Cemetery.
The
culture rich North End, has a growing art community with several new galleries
opening this past year. Highlights in this part of the city include Flamenco
dancers to accompany Zehava Power’s Flamenco-inspired paintings at Fred
Gallery, and Picture Promanade a
video/audio installation presented in collaboration with the Centre for Art
Tapes at Eye Level Gallery.
Marginal
Road and the site of NSCAD’s Port Campus will also be a hot spot this year.
Five galleries plus five Independent Projects are happening in the Marginal
Road area. Projects include: collaborative art, weaving, sculpture, and sound
installation. Julie Adamson Miller and Bonnie Baker, invite the public to
participate in their project by allowing people to add to a composition in
sequence, seeing only what the person before them contributed. The end works
will be a surprise for all.
