E. Black Gallery mandate is to present exhibitions which educate the
public about craft and design, and to promote the pursuance of
excellence in the craft community. The artwork of Newfoundland
artist Audrey Feltham is complex and many-layered. According to Guest
Writer for the exhibition “The Red Shoes: The Invisible Landscape”
Gloria Hickey, some is visual, like the old family photographs Feltham
starts with where the image is applied to pieced and sewn rag paper;
other is technical, like the array of printmakers materials and
techniques Feltham uses to manipulate image colour and texture; and
finally there is the lyrical text, seductive quotes from novels and
poems that suggest to us how to approach the conceptual whole of the
artwork. Feltham is connecting the prismatic layers of personal
experience, perception, memory and knowledge using all the devices at
her aesthetic disposal to reach and share some kind of universal truth.

Featured Exhibitions "Up In The Air", New Paintings by Yang Hong (Gallery 1) & "Staged", Series of Photographs by Adrian Fish
Hong
explores the materials of paint, language, and form in relation to the
passing of time. His use of composition is inventive and evocative in
the way that the series of work can be presented and re-arranged. The
surface quality is manifested through graphic elements, and their
relationship to one another, and the work rests on the shoulders of the
sublime as it exists somewhere between abstraction and representation.
He is interested in combining the realm of the esoteric and ambiguous
state of memory through the tactility and reality of the medium of
paint.
Adrian Fish is a Toronto- and Halifax-based artist and
teacher working in photography. He holds an MFA from York University
and is currently Assistant Professor at NSCAD University in Halifax, NS.
Continuing
his practice of documenting contemporary architectural spaces, the
Staged project surveys theatres located in Toronto. Each environment
is devoid of viewers, suggesting the pregnant moment before an
anticipated spectacle. With their consistent viewpoint, the
large-format digital photographs mimic traditional photographic notions
of objectivity, while the suggestion of an audience implies the
subjective and constructed nature of all photographs.
