Based upon the ubiquity of book to film conversions, ADAPTATION is a one-night, continuous performance examining Charlie and Donald Kaufman’s screenplay Adaptation, the 2002 Academy Award winning movie directed by Spike Jonze. A meta-narrative about a writer who struggles to realize the screenplay adaptation of a novel, Adaptation features 4 narratives concurrently. The story circles around itself, a worm eating its own tail; the performance ADAPTATION seeks to extend the self-referential cycle presented in the screenplay.
By activating layers of traditional oral storytelling, bookbinding and typewriting alongside contemporary performance and video projection, ADAPTATION calls into question the experience of the reader as viewer, while referencing the digital mediation of books and film-making.
