Reflections on the Sea: Tall Ship Portraits and Models offers a glimpse into the province’s historic ties to the ocean through
the eyes of artists practicing during the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. Including scale sculptural replicas and paintings by
recognized ship portrait artists, such as John O’Brien and John Loos,
as well as examples from the Chinese School and by lesser-known
artisans of the period, the selection of work focuses on the
representation of tall ships which were built or registered in Nova
Scotia. As many of the models and portraits document vessels made
in Yarmouth and other communities throughout the South Shore, the
exhibition reflects upon the significant role that this region played
in the early development of North Atlantic trade and commerce.
Reflections on the Sea: Tall Ship Portraits and Models was made possible with the generous support of the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives through the loan of works from their permanent collection.
