Historical Art Gallery
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has done extensive work to frame decorative furnishings – or things that have as their first reason for existence some domestic purpose – as objects demanding aesthetic, critical, and historical attention in the broader scope of the folk art genre.
Past exhibitions such as Decorated Nova Scotia Furnishings (1978) and Spirit of Nova Scotia: Traditional Decorative Folk Art 1780-1930 (1985), to name a few, have been integral in championing this cause in a wider public forum. Following suit, Hooked on the Past looks to traditional hooked rugs as objects that put the “fun” in function through fine craftsmanship, playful ornamentation, and a colourful history.
