Discover the fantastical world of folk art in this exhibition of select
pieces from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Permanent
Collection. Folk Art of the Maritimes celebrates the distinct heritage of Eastern Canada through the playful
work of artists whose lives were, and are, inextricably bound to the
land and sea.
Including paintings, drawings, life-sized carved figures and painted
objects, the work included in this exhibition illustrates themes of
domestic life, farming and fishing, while revealing the intuitive
genius of its makers. Revered folk artists such as Maud Lewis,
Joe Norris, Joseph Sleep and John Hooper are represented along with others from this rich and varied tradition.
