Terry Havlis Drahos

Originally from Chicago, IL, Terry Havlis Drahos received her Bachelor of Design from Southern Illinois University in 1983. She completed her Bachelor of Education at Acadia and NSCAD Universities (Wolfville and Halifax, NS, respectively) in 2006, specializing in Art and Technology. She currently lives in Wolfville, NS.

For the past three years her work has been inspired by the winter landscape.  This series of paintings explores the formal elements of line, color, and composition found both outdoors and in the studio.  Each painting is layered first with acrylic paint, then a gel medium transfer of a photograph, and completed with several layers of oil paint; trapping and imbedding the image within the painting.  This process creates the appearance of deep or voluminous space— environments in which the viewers’ imagined narratives may take place.  These eight paintings are the conclusion of this body of work.

Along with working on her Tree Lines series, Drahos’ varied involvement in the Nova Scotia arts community includes serving on the Board of Directors of Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) and as the chairperson of the Alliance of Kings Artists (AKA). She initiated and directs the Uncommon Common Art Project and is a frequent contributor to VANS’ Professional Artists in the Schools (PAINTS) program.

Drahos has exhibited nationally, and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. In 2005-06 she was involved in a group guerrilla sculpture initiative throughout Wolfville. Some solo exhibitions include Drawn by Nature at Harvest Gallery (Wolfville, NS 2012), In Deep at the Craig Gallery (Dartmouth, NS, 2009) and Assumptions at ARTsPLACE (Annapolis Royal, NS, 2007). In addition to Arts Sales and Rental Drahos’ paintings can be seen at Secord Gallery (Halifax, NS), Harvest Gallery (Wolfville, NS), Koyman Gallery (Ottawa, ON).
