Nocturne, the fall festival that brings art and energy to the streets of Halifax between 6 p.m.-midnight, will take place on Saturday October 19th, 2013.
The completely free annual event showcases and celebrates the visual arts scene in Halifax. Nocturne, designed and planned by volunteers, is an opportunity for everyone to experience the art of Halifax in a whole new light.
This year Nocturne has taken a new approach to its exhibits by employing a curator for the event. Eleanor King is an interdisciplinary artist who presents installations and performances nationally and internationally. Her goal this year is to put together a cohesive exhibition of projects in the Halifax/Dartmouth downtown core that contribute directly to ideas of site-specificity and duration.
Eleanor has developed the theme for this year’s event as “Time & Space”, with the artists considering these ideas as a starting point in the making of their works and/or in the result of the audiences’ experience.
The main event of the evening will be a live, large-scale, collaborative drawing. The drawing will incorporate the postures, interactions and movement of the viewers in the gallery space as subject matter.
The piece will develop throughout the night as several artists consecutively draw their own interpretation of the gallery in a 45 minute time frame. Through a process of reductive and additive gestural mark-making, each artist will be articulating the surrounding space and responding to the visual information provided by the previous artist. Creating a work that is a multivalent, collaborative construction of space.
Two themes will be explored in the surrounding exhibition. Artists are invited to submit one work that will focus on how space and depth can be investigated within the confines of the picture plane. Or they may submit two-set pieces (a diptych or two separate works that interact with one another) examining one subject in two distinct temporal events. Artists are invited to interpret this theme using the media of their choice.
The gallery will be open from 10AM-Midnight on Saturday October 19th with the Live Drawing Event taking place between 6PM - 11PM
