Bernard Bowles was born in Toronto, Ontario and has resided in Nova Scotia since 1988. He has always surrounded himself in art. In 1993 he opened his home to the public, where he showcased his paintings and many different types of art objects, mostly made from found materials. This was so well received that by 2002 he could not keep up with the demand.
His paintings capture movement in a rugged coastline or humour in a series of portraits; from a fisherman smoking a cigarette while going about his daily work to a chipmunk amidst a thick forest of browns and golds, his works are both whimsical and dramatic.
Besides his wonderful use of colour, Bernard also creates texture by scratching away the painted surface to create the pattern of jagged rocks or the floral design of a tablecloth, adding another dimension to his unique style.
