Kids Art Classes


June 30 – July 4 (This session is 4 days only.  There is no class on Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1st)

BENEATH THE LAYERS with artist Nicole Rahim

Explore the world of colour and texture using oil pastels. Students will learn how to manipulate oil pastels by blending and layering colours. Inspiration will be drawn by looking at artworks such as Canadian landscapes in the Gallery collection.

A WORLD OF THEIR OWN with artist Brittany Warren

This class will take photography out of the frame and into the three dimensional world. Students will be testing their imagination and exploring photography’s limitations as they create sculptures, collages and books to fabricate beautiful worlds and stories!

THE TANGLED GARDEN with artist Heather Wilkinson

Have you got a green thumb? After observing and sketching plants from both life and artworks in the AGNS collection, we’ll cultivate our own 3-D art gardens- where plants with personality thrive. We will explore techniques such as printmaking, painting, and collage. We will also experiment with making handmade paper and cast paper objects using real plant material.

CLAY ANIMAL EXTRAVAGANZA with artist Bethany Riordan-Butterworth

Get ready for an animal extravaganza! Students are going to learn about animals and how to create them out of clay. Using artworks on display at the Gallery, students will gather inspiration for their art making.

CREATE WITH CLAY with artist Bethany Riordan-Butterworth

Using a variety of processes, students will use clay to create both functional and sculptural artworks. They will learn to build by hand, model figures, and work on the wheel.  There will also be time to explore surface decoration, pattern and colour.

Students will make bright, bold and expressive creations using printmaking and painting techniques inspired by famous works of art.  Marbling and mono printing, block printing collage and collaboration will be explored in this class.

Make landscape drawings, collages and paintings while also exercising your imagination to build your own treehouse and diorama. Students will learn about trees, agriculture, drawing from life, texture and composition. It’ll be a busy and creative week of art making!

WORLD OF ART with artist Margarita Fainshtein

Let’s explore the world of art! Learn exciting art techniques and processes: paint on various kinds of fabric, create a unique clay diptych, and make a beautiful appliqué on linen. There will be lots of drawing and painting, and mixing of materials during this week of fun!

ART BY THE SEA JAMBOREE with artist Melinda Spooner

This class is an opportunity to discover the wonderful world of art using painting, printmaking, drawing, collage, and sculpting while discovering the stories, events and people of the Maritimes and the sea. Create ship flags and sashes with printmaking, a folding nautical map and artist trading cards, and construct your own model boat and diorama. Students will visit The Art Boat and the shipbuilding at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

This class is all about drawing – learn the basics and then let your imagination soar. Students will use the AGNS collection as inspiration and will explore materials such as oil pastels, charcoal, pencil and more!

PUPPET UP! with artist Brittany Warren

Explore ways of creating your own wacky puppet characters! Students will use paint, collage, 3D materials – even their own faces. Hand puppets, shadow puppets, marionettes and stage construction will be created – everything you need for an original puppet production!

MONSTER MANIA with artist Nicole Rahim

Create all kinds of outlandish “monster art” using various techniques and materials including paint, paper-maché, puppetry, and mask making.  A great class for using your imagination and sense of humour too!

CLAYIN’ AROUND IN THE GARDEN with artist Therese Bombardier

Join in on a week filled with garden-themed clay fun! Students will be guided through a wide variety of exercises and techniques that lead them into their own exploration of materials and tools. Through both hand-building and the use of the wheel, students will create functional and non-functional art works.

Bring your imagination to life through the magical world of stop motion animation! The class will focus on the joy of creating 'moving' works through a variety of different materials and techniques. Students will go through the whole process of creating a short animated film, including developing stories, constructing sets and characters, shooting, editing and producing.

August 5 – 8 (4 days only)

PUPPET PLAYERS PERFORM with artist Odessa Spore

Create sock puppets, paper maché marionettes, shadow puppets and finger puppets too!  We will also explore original and traditional story telling. At the end of the week, students will perform for their family and friends using their hand-made puppets.

Venture off the beaten path! Students will discover more about the history, tradition, and symbolism of petroglyphs created by Indigenous people of Canada and across North America. Students will create their very own petroglyphs inspired by their experiences.

August 11 - 15    

STROLL IN THE PARK with artist Ted Higney

Let’s spend the week creating art using the wonderful things found in nature! This class will encourage students to start looking at the relationship between science and art. We will explore nature through observations and a variety of art practices such as drawing, watercolour painting and collage. Come take a walk in the park!

SUN PRINTING MAGIC with artist Brittany Warren

Cyanotypes and photograms are one of the first methods of photography and are widely accessible for people of all ages. With a scavenger hunt appeal, students will make photographic collages using found objects then magically use the sun to leave an impression of the objects on the surface. This class will bring the magic of science and the passion for art together!

ANIMAL MAGIC with artist Charlotte Marble

The wild world of animals offers many wonderful possibilities for the creative and imaginative artist. From pop-up books, to sculptures and fantastical animal paintings, there is something for everyone on this grand, artistic adventure!
