 Week 1: July 6 – 10

CLAY ANIMAL EXTRAVAGANZA! with artist Bethany Riordan-Butterworth

Get ready for an animal extravaganza! We will explore different kinds of animals and learn how to make them out of clay. Using artwork on display at the Gallery, students will be inspired to make and invent their own animal masterpieces!

FINGERBOARD SKATE PARK! with artist Andrew Maize

Create your own Fingerboard Skate Park! Working with a variety of materials, students will design and build skate parks of their wildest imaginations. Learning how to build epic half pipes, crazy rails and big kickers, students will practice model making skills such as cutting, gluing and painting. Students will then ride the parks and learn some tricks for using a fingerboard!

OUT OF THE CITY AND INTO THE WOODS with artist D’Arcy Wilson

This is a workshop all about dreams of summer paradises outside of the city:  lakesides, campsites, the forests, and also, the animals who live there. Using mixed media ranging from collage to paint to papier-maché, students will create their own fantastical woodland. Meanwhile, they will also have a chance to consider the natural world at their doorstep while gaining practical instruction in drawing and painting.

TIME TRAVELLER ARTSTRAVAGANZA with artist Charlotte Marble

Join the fun as we venture into artistic time travelling with time machine models, “ART PHONES”, Intergallactic Compasses and Robot Companions! Time travelling artists will experience creative ways of constructing imaginative and detailed time travel props and costumes using a wide assortment of recycled objects and art materials. Let your imagination soar!

Week 2: July 13 - 17

THREAD & FIBRE & FABRIC, Oh my! with artist Tara Grude

Creating art with an amazing variety of colours, patterns, and textures of fabric and fibers is so much fun! During this week, we will explore many different textile techniques including felting, weaving, sculpting, printing and dying, and students will  bring home many works of art. Dig your hands into something new and discover the many ways you can weave your creativity into textile art!

CREATE WITH CLAY with artist Bethany Riordan-Butterworth

Using a variety of processes, students will use clay to create their own masterpieces! Through techniques including building by hand and using the wheel, students will produce both functional and non-functional sculptural pieces. By viewing artworks in the Gallery, students will make work inspired by what they see. There will also be time to explore surface decoration, pattern and colour.

OUR CITY PUZZLE with artist Miro Davis

Students will begin a collaboration with sketches inspired by the surrounding city streets. They will then magically sculpt their ideas into a 3-D City Block full of colour, texture, shape and stories. Each piece of this city puzzle will fit together as they watch their new city grow! Create with clay, found objects, wood, glass and much more.

*Please note: This class includes well-supervised excursions to neighbouring streets around the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.


Prepare to be amazed! Draw a black line to make a white space. Form a bump and you’ve made a hole. In this class, students will explore 2D and 3D techniques where you start out with one thing and end up with another. We’ll make simple molds and prints using materials such as plasticine, plaster, jelly, ink and rollers.

Week 3: July 20– 24

A WORLD OF THEIR OWN with artist Brittany Warren

This class will take photography out of the frame and into the three dimensional world. Students will be testing their imaginations and exploring the many possibilities of photography as they create sculptures, collages and books to fabricate beautiful worlds and stories!

ANIMALIA with artist Susan Wolf

Animals have been the subjects of art making for centuries. Using sound, texture, movement and colour inspired by our furry, scaly, and feathered friends, students will create 2D and 3D projects that they’ll love.

Week 4: July 27 - 31

THE GREAT SEVEN SEA ADVENTURE with artist Brittany Warren

Students will swash-buckle, swim and sing their way through this oceanic adventure! A week spent travelling the world learning about the exciting life of sea creatures – both real and mythical – by painting, sculpting, and collaging.

TERRA-GOTCHA CLAY FIGURES with artist Fenn Martin

Welcome to the fiery world of clay hand building. The week’s activities will include the exploration of clay friezes, relief-figurative works and the fabrication of our very own terra-cotta figures! Students will enjoy both independent and collaborative projects during this week of discovery.

Week 5: August 10 - 14


Shadow puppetry, mask-making and handmade lanterns will be created through traditional and non-traditional methods of printmaking, painting and collage and will culminate in a magical parade of glowing artwork.

Have you ever noticed how light shines so beautifully through stained glass windows? Come learn more about the ancient world of “vitrage” (stained glass) and explore the world of colour, light and reflection.

*Please note: Plexiglass will be used in this workshop.

Week 6: August 17 - 21

DYNAMIC! CERAMIC! with artist Therese Bombardier

Join us for a week filled with clay fun! In this workshop, Therese will guide students through a dynamic variety of exercises and techniques that lead them to creating exciting new projects. Through both hand building and use of the wheel, students will create functional and non-functional pieces of art. Students will take gallery tours, tell stories, play games and look at books to tweak their imagination and find inspiration!

PRINT! PRINT! PRINT! With artist Odessa Spore

Have fun multiplying your own original images in this week of printmaking. Put your mark on the world by exploring different hand printing techniques such as relief, stencil printing, sun printing and image transfer. After branding your images you will create a number of products which highlight your unique style!

Week 7: August 24 - 28  

I DREAM OF THE MARINE! with artist Bess Forrestall

Students will take inspiration from Halifax’s lively harbour to create their own ferryboat, dinghy or pirate ship during this week-long marine exploration. Students will have the opportunity to create their own mixed media sculptures, as well as trying their hand at acrylic and watercolor painting.

SUN PRINTING MAGIC with artist Brittany Warren

Cyanotypes and photograms are two of the first methods used in photography and are widely accessible for students of all ages. With a scavenger hunt appeal -- students will make photographic collages using found objects then magically use the sun to leave an impression of the objects on the surface. This class will bring the magic of science and art together!
