ART, DANCE AND DRUM!
Explore the world of dance, pattern, colour, and music with art educator Cynthia Lewis. Students will dye and print fabric, create rhythms on the drum, dance and have fun performing too. Let's get moving!

CHARACTERS, CREATURES AND BOOKS: ERIC CARLE INSPIRED!
Put that imagination to good use and create a one-of-a-kind children’s book with artist Nicole Rahim! Students will be using Eric Carle’s style to create a unique storybook all their own. They will play with colour and texture to create different animals and characters from basic shapes. A great class to get the creative juices flowing!

GROCERY STORE SCULPTURES
Make your very own supermarket with cast plaster and concrete, clay and paper mache with artist Miro Davis. We will make 3D bottles, cans, boxes of cereal, cartons of milk, containers of yogurt, ice cream, candy bars and much more. Get creative and silly with your own labels when you design, paint, and name your products for the shelves. Sure to be a hit!

BENEATH THE LAYERS: OIL PASTEL DRAWING
Come discover colour using oil pastels with artist Nicole Rahim. Mix, blend, smudge and layer as you experiment with this fun drawing material. Students will view Canadian landscapes in the Gallery’s permanent collection including artworks by the well-known Canadian artists in the Group of Seven.

CREATE WITH CLAY
Using a variety of processes, students will use clay to create their own masterpieces with artist Bethany Riordan-Butterworth! Learn clay techniques such as building by hand and using the pottery wheel to make both functional and sculptural ceramic items. By visiting artworks throughout the Gallery, students will make work inspired by what they see. There will also be time to explore surface decoration, pattern and colour.

GO FLY SOME ART!
Join artist Andrew Maize for a week-long wind art and kite-building extravaganza! Students will learn to build, design, and fly several different types of kites, whirligigs and other wind-powered art. So come fly some art, and learn about the science, history and the art of kites!

AROUND THE WORLD
Join artist Margarita Fainshtein to explore diversity through art. Take a virtual trip around the world, creating art from different cultures and discovering artists from Canada and beyond! Start by making your own passport, then pass through customs and you’re off! It will be a week full of variety as students use a potpourri of materials and techniques.

MASTER PUPPET THEATRE!
Explore the wonderful world of puppet creation with artist Brittany Warren. Give your puppet characters personality and watch them come to life! We will cover various techniques of puppet-making, from the basics of sock puppets to the fine art of marionettes. By the end of the week, students will have experienced styles, techniques and the art of putting on their very own puppet theatre.

UNDER THE BIG TOP
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, come explore the art of the circus with ringmaster and artist Heather Wilkinson. We will design bold posters to draw in the crowds, build miniature circus worlds with a variety of found materials, and create our own performing circus puppets to tell the story of the “Biggest Show on Earth”!

DYNAMIC! CERAMIC!
Come join ceramic artist Therese Bombardier for a week filled with clay fun! In this workshop, Therese will guide students through a dynamic variety of exercises and techniques that lead them into their own exploration of materials and tools. Through both hand-building and the pottery wheel, students will create functional and non-functional pieces of art. We will take Gallery tours, tell stories and look at books to spark imagination and inspiration!

CELEBRATE NOVA SCOTIA
Take an artistic tour with art educator Rosemary Young around the province without leaving the Art Gallery! We will use many different techniques to create some wonderful works of art. From Oak Island treasure maps on our own handmade paper to Halifax cityscapes, to Cape Breton sailboats and more, we will have fun with new art activities each day. We will learn more about Nova Scotia too by viewing lots of artworks by Atlantic Canadian artists.

FANTASTIC LIFE IN MARSHES AND THE SEA

Explore paper! Find ways to make things from what you find in your recycling bin. We will transform candy wrappers, junk mail and newspaper into jewelry, fun everyday objects and expressive pieces of art with artist Odessa Spore.

SOS…SURFACES OF SEASONS
In this mosaic art workshop with artist Miro Davis, we will design and decorate drawings inspired by our seasons. We will turn them into textured wall hangings with patterns and images made from all sorts of fun stuff like broken dishes, glass, old toy parts, beads, pebbles, and sand. Shadow puppetry, mask-making and handmade lanterns will be created through traditional and non-traditional methods of printmaking, painting and collage with artist Melinda Spooner. The week will culminate with a magical parade of glowing artwork.

EYE SPY ART
You’re the detective in this week long investigation into art with artist Susan Wolf! Explore the Gallery and uncover the stories and inspiration behind your favourite pieces. Make mysterious art works using mixed media, use problem solving to create sculptures and discover the science of art museums. As part of this class, you will have opportunities to take some sneak peeks behind the scenes to understand more about how art museums work!
