Young Learners: Pre-Primary Experiences in Art

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Education work in partnership to support learning in and through the visual arts. This exhibition celebrated our youngest learners through the artwork of the children enrolled in the Department of Education’s

Pre-Primary Program.

Pre-Primary is a developmentally appropriate program model in the public school system wherein early childhood educators gently guide learning in an environment that encourages children’s natural curiosity, creativity, and imagination.

The visual arts are an essential component of the Pre-Primary Program. Children are encouraged to observe their surroundings, envision their ideas, and create art in response. The works presented here, created by four and five year-olds, demonstrate both a richness of experience and the capacity of young learners to express themselves through the visual arts.

A co-publication titled, Young Learners: Experiences in Art, which includes visual images created by children from the Pre-Primary Program, will be launched by the AGNS.
