June 25, 2009 - HALIFAX, NS - The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is pleased to have Eleanor King as its
Artist-in-Residence for the month of July.
King's new installation, Obso less sense [sic] is part of the exhibition Sometimes Always now on view at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Obso less sense was created specifically for the exhibition and represents a
fantastical junk shop, combining a multitude of objects to create
organic and architectural forms. Stacks of discarded items, carefully
arranged obsolete media, and organized collections of old equipment
fill the space. The atmosphere is cluttered yet structured, with
components of audio interspersed throughout the installation. The junk
shop is a comment on the obsolete, an index of consumption and a
collection of (in this case) the media and technology that we discard
to be perpetually replaced with the newer and better model. The
installation is on view with the exhibition until August 30, 2009.
Eleanor King will be available at the AGNS: Tuesdays 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm;
Thursdays 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm, and Saturdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
King is an interdisciplinary artist who works with site-specific
installation incorporating elements of audio, video, photography, and
sculpture. Her work fuses found materials in a playful way to critique
social behaviours, investigating consumer and tourist cultures. She has
exhibited nationally and internationally and has participated in
residency programs in Canada and the US. King teaches in the Media
Arts department at NSCAD University and holds the position of
Exhibitions Coordinator at Anna Leonowens Gallery. She is also a member
of indie-rock bands The Just Barelys and The Got to Get Got. After her
residency she embarks on an extensive Canadian tour with The Got to Get
Got.
King will spend the residency working on new projects,
smaller versions of pieces seen in the installation. She will be
working on a new, shorter record stack, some new works with electronic
components, and some sculptural projects using parts of a piano. King
will also spend time in her installation interacting with Gallery
visitors.
