Halifax, Canada – October 19, 2011 – On the heels of the recent Sobey Art Award announcement, Sarah Fillmore, Chief Curator and Curator of the Sobey Art Award will be hosting a public tour and talk on Sunday October 23rd at 2:30 pm at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Ms. Fillmore will offer further insight into the shortlisted artists and the works currently on view in the awards exhibition.
The 2011 Sobey Art Award was awarded to Ontario artists Daniel Young and Christian Giroux on October 13th for their sculptures, films and installations. The other shortlisted artists from across the country include multimedia artists Charles Stankievech (West Coast and Yukon) and Manon De Pauw (Québec); photographer Sarah Ann Johnson (Prairies and the North) and sculptor Zeke Moores (Atlantic). The finalists each received $5,000 while the winners received $50,000.
The Sobey Art Award is Canada’s pre-eminent contemporary art award. It was created by the Sobey Art Foundation in 2002 to honour the achievement of Canadian artists age 40 years and younger and is organized and administered by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
The 2011 Sobey Art Award exhibition is on view at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia until January 8, 2012 and is accompanied by a fully-illustrated, complimentary catalogue.
This month’s Family Sunday at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia will also feature a Sobey Art Award theme. Outside the Box inspired by the 2011 Sobey Art Award exhibition will take place on Sunday October 30th from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm. All are welcome.
