Research & Research Visits

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia welcomes researchers interested in finding out more about particular artists and the artworks in the Gallery's Permanent Collection. The Gallery maintains files on all the artists in the collection.

At the moment, detailed research can only be conducted on-site, however, a good starting point for all research is through Artefacts Canada, which contains full records for the entire Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Permanent Collection.

Gallery staff are happy to accommodate reasonable amounts of preliminary research on behalf of researchers, as well as formal research visits. Research requests that require excessive amounts of staff time will be charged a curatorial fee.

To arrange a research visit:

Regulations

  • Research access is provided by appointment only and is dependent on staff availability. Research requests should be made one month prior to the visit to best accommodate requests. Research hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am-noon and 1:00-4:00 pm.

  • Food, drink, and chewing gum are not allowed within research areas.

  • Pencils are the only writing instruments allowed within research areas.

  • Bags, briefcases, coats, and umbrellas may not be taken into any of the research areas. Secure locations are available for these items.

  • Researchers will be accompanied by a staff member at all times.

  • Care and handling of collections materials is the primary responsibility of the Gallery staff accompanying the researcher.

  • Photography is strictly prohibited unless special permission is sought and granted prior to the research visit.

  • If excessive staff time is necessary to support the requested research, the Gallery will charge a curatorial fee.

  • It is requested that a copy of all papers or publications that result from the research conducted at the Gallery be forwarded for our records.

  • Disregarding these regulations or otherwise behaving in a manner that endangers the Gallery collection or staff will result in research privileges being revoked.
