Mathew Reichertz

Mathew Reichertz was born and raised in Montréal, Québec. He attended Concordia University where he received a BFA in 1993.  In 1997 he moved to Halifax and in 1999 he received an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.  He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions across Canada including the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery (Newfoundland), Beaverbrook Art Gallery (New Brunswick), Galerie Action Art Actual (Québec) as well as the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

As part of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition national touring exhibition his work was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto (Ontario), Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery, Halifax (Nova Scotia), Bau-Xi Gallery, Vancouver (British Columbia) and Galerie Sussex Gallery, Ottawa (Ontario).  In 2001 a permanent, site-specific painting was installed in the Sobey Building of Saint Mary’s University, Halifax (Nova Scotia). He has received creation and presentation grants from the province of Nova Scotia and is included in a variety of institutional collections.

In 2006, he was the Atlantic Canada nominee for the Sobey Art Award, which was hosted by the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. In that exhibition he premiered a new series of work, seven large paintings collectively called The Fight. This complex work is at once tough to look at and extremely visually compelling. What at first appears to be a melee, on inspection, is revealed as repeated images of the same pair of figures locked in battle, each pair progressing forward in the picture plane, successively increasing in scale from the top to the bottom of the canvas. Suggesting the sequential nature of narrative and the physical reality of film (episode following episode; frame following frame), this work depicts a battle that ranges across recognizable landmarks of  Halifax - among the locations are Seaview Park, Point Pleasant Park, the downtown core, and the waterfront.
