While the majority of acquisitions made by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia are acquired through donations and bequests
, the AGNS also purchases key works with the assistance of a variety of funding bodies and endowments, including the Department of Heritage
, the Canada Council for the Arts
, the AGNS Art Sales and Rental Society
, the Fred and Elizabeth Fountain Endowment for Contemporary Art, the Sheldon and Marjorie Fountain Endowment Fund (Historical Canadian Art), the Jean and Lloyd Shaw Law Endowment Fund (Ceramics), and the Professor Donald Higgins Memorial Fund (Ceramics), as well as many private individuals.
Among the strongest continual support is that of the Art Sales and Rental Society which has assisted the AGNS in acquiring 96 works since the inception of the Gallery. Most recently the ASAR provided funds to purchase a group of sculptures produced by renowned Nova Scotian folk artist Bradford Naugler. It’s a grouping that has been catching the eyes and interest of all our visitors since they were installed in the Gallery in mid-August and it’s one you may be familiar with – President Obama and family (including their dog, Bo).
