THE ROY Condominium Residence Sponsors Upcoming Exhibition

Halifax, NS ‒ Nov. 12, 2014 ‒ People who love art will have a chance to view an exhibition by one of Canada’s most important young artists, thanks to the sponsorship of THE ROY Condominium Residence. The corporation has agreed to provide $25,000 to support the touring exhibition of Graeme Patterson’s Secret Citadel

“Halifax is a vibrant city, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is the most significant home for visual arts in the province,” said Louis Reznick, of THE ROY Condominium Residence. “I’m pleased to provide sponsorship to bring these works to Nova Scotians.”

A major travelling solo exhibition, Secret Citadel was co-curated by Sarah Fillmore, Chief Curator, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Melissa Bennett, Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Hamilton. The exhibition is made up of a 30-minute animation and mixed media installations -- detailed large-scale sculptures of a mountain, houses, bunk beds and a player piano. The installations contain miniature worlds that represent the key moments of the film and hint at nostalgic memories.

“In Secret Citadel, Graeme Patterson invites us in to a world of play, but one that encourages reflection on life, longing, loss and recovery,” said Sarah Fillmore, Chief Curator, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. “THE ROY’s sponsorship helps the gallery to exhibit the best of this country’s art for Nova Scotians.”

The exhibition revolves around the trials and tribulations of growing up, and though Patterson focuses on male friendships, all viewers will be able to relate to it.

Graeme Patterson is the youngest artist in Canada to have work acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. His work has shown nationally and internationally. He was the Atlantic finalist for the 2009 Sobey Art Award, a finalist for the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award, and a 2011 Juno award nominee for album package of the year. Born in Saskatchewan, he graduated from the NSCAD University in 2002 and now lives in Sackville, N.B.

Secret Citadel opens at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on Jan. 31. Six prints from the film will be on display in THE ROY when it opens November 23.
