Official Statement from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on the passing of Alex Colville (24 August 1920 - 16 July 2013)
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is deeply saddened by the loss of Alex Colville. Canada has lost one of its greatest artists and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, a dear friend. Colville’s over 70-year career established his pre-eminence among contemporary Canadian painters - one who visually chronicled life around him from his work as an overseas war artist to one working in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. His subjects, often his family, including his pets and himself, came to represent archetypes. Through his carefully constructed paintings and prints, his works have come to typify Atlantic Realism. He leaves a rich legacy.
Robbie Shaw, Chair of the AGNS Board of Governors said:
“In his roles as teacher, mentor and honorary Governor of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia he demonstrated generosity and rigour. The Gallery stands with his family in this time of loss and offers sincere condolences. “
