Metamorphosis: The Art of Robert Pope Opens at AGNS

SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 – HALIFAX, NS – Running to December 9th, 2012, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) presents Metamorphosis: The Art of Robert Pope. This powerful and deeply moving exhibition is guest curated by Tom Smart and celebrates the life and work of social realist painter Robert Pope (1956-1992). There will be an exhibition celebration and catalogue launch on Thursday September 27th at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Robert Pope was a Halifax based artist, who despite his tragically early death in 1992 at the age of 35, left an extraordinary series of artworks dealing with the experience of undergoing cancer treatments, the emotional and psychological effects of his illness, and his desire to speak both specifically and universally about death and dying.

Curator Tom Smart says:
“Autobiography was essential to Robert Pope’s project, to show a human confronting his mortality and his experiences with the health care professionals treating him.”

Ray Cronin, Director and CEO says:
“When Robert Pope succumbed to cancer in 1992 he left his native Nova Scotia a lasting and deeply affecting artistic legacy. The AGNS is honoured to hold this collection and in this, the 20th anniversary year of his death, we are pleased to be presenting this survey of Pope’s all-too-short career.”

In the 20 years since Robert Pope died, there has been an annual presentation of his 96 images of illness and healing, to the entering medical class at Dalhousie University. A copy of Pope’s book, Illness and Healing: Images of Cancer is also given to each student.

This exhibition is sponsored by The Robert Pope Foundation and highlights the generous gift of works made to the AGNS in 2008 by the Foundation. The exhibition also includes works drawn from the Pope family collection, Acadia University Art Gallery, Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery, Dalhousie Medical School and a variety of private collections.

Metamorphosis: The Art of Robert Pope has been organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and is guest curated by Tom Smart. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour catalogue featuring an essay by curator Tom Smart and messages from Dr. T. Jock Murray, President of the Robert Pope Foundation and Ray Cronin, Director and CEO of the AGNS.

"Art is powerful preventive medicine. Looking at a picture is like walking through an endless
series of doors, with each succeeding door leading us deeper and deeper into a rich experience. This journey stimulates our minds, our emotions, our souls; it makes us more alive. Ultimately the esthetic experience heals us and makes us whole
