Antique Appraisal Experience Visits Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

July 4, 2012 – HALIFAX, NS – Following a successful first visit in 2011, Bonhams, the world renowned fine art auctioneers and valuers are returning to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) on Saturday July 21st and Sunday July 22nd.

Part history, part mystery and part treasure hunt, the Bonhams appraisal team will be back in Halifax to value items you and your family may have always been curious about. Space is limited and one-on-one appointments for this popular fundraising event can be booked for both days between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

Some of Canada’s leading antiques and fine art specialists will be on hand to offer advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their basements and attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and yard sale finds for inspection by the experts.

The Bonhams appraisal team visiting the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia includes: President, Jack Kerr-Wilson (British and European paintings and Decorative Arts); Perry Tung (Canadian and European Art); Loraine Turner (Silver); and Kristin Hayashi (Jewellery). The team will also be evaluating Collectables.

President of Bonhams Canada, Jack Kerr-Wilson says:

“The team is all looking forward to visiting Halifax for the second time. We did see some great and interesting things last year and it will be exciting to see what else will come to light over the two days we spend at the AGNS this year. If we can help in identifying an object, whatever the value, the owner can go away with more information about some family treasure.”

Bernard Doucet, AGNS Director of Institutional Advancement says:

“Watching the experts from Bonhams at work is fascinating and hearing about the legendary finds first-hand is a real eye-opener. We had a few great stories from last year and are hoping for more this year. The AGNS and the Friends of the AGNS are delighted to welcome Jack Kerr-Wilson and his team of specialists back for another fun-filled fundraising weekend.”

Space is limited and there is a $20 per item appointment fee with a maximum of three items per person. To arrange a booking time please contact Krista Wadman at 902-424-4862; gov.ns.ca

Notes for Editors

About Jack Kerr-Wilson, President of Bonhams Canada
Jack Kerr-Wilson has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the art and auction industry. Working in London for the eminent Oriental dealers Bluett & Sons and later at Spink & Son in the 1960s, Jack emigrated to Canada in 1973, where he spent the next decade working for the Marlborough Godard Gallery in Montreal and at Ward-Price in Toronto, which was acquired by Phillips in 1978. Jack swiftly rose through the ranks of Phillips Ward-Price Ltd. to become General Manager in 1979, Vice President in 1980, and the following year was appointed President. He left in 1983 to run the Pagurian Gallery in Toronto, owned by Sir Christopher Ondaatje. In 1988 he was asked to return to Phillips as President for Canada, during which time he single-handedly ran two auctions a year between 1988 and 1992 and achieved several world record prices. Jack took over as President for Bonhams in Canada following the merger with Phillips, and continues to source exceptional items for sale in London, and was responsible for the sale of the Modigliani in June 2004 for £1.4 million. Jack's expertise is such that he was one of only two appraisers selected by the Federal Government on behalf of the Public Archives of Canada to be sent to London to value over 7,000 items from the Peter Winkworth Collection, which now rest in the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa.
