ArtReach Mural Unveiled at new Yarmouth Farmer’s Market
Halifax, Canada – June 1, 2011 – An ArtReach market mural titled Agora will be unveiled at the pre-opening of the brand new Yarmouth Farmer’s Community Market on Friday June 3rd at 5pm. All are welcome to attend.
Agora, the Greek word for market, was created by students in Art 12 and the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts program at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School. Students worked with contemporary artist Brian Porter and teacher David Baldwin to create images that reflect their ideas, thoughts and feelings about Yarmouth’s new market and the role it will play in their community.
Angela Collier, AGNS Yarmouth Coordinator said:
“The students embraced the vision of the new farmer’s market as a meeting place and I am thrilled it will be the welcoming feature at the markets new home”. Ms. Collier was instrumental in finding Agora a community home in Yarmouth.
David Baldwin, Teacher at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School said:
“The mural includes hands holding a decorative mosaic tree carrying produce from the market set in a field of sunflowers. The students really enjoyed the process of creating something that reflects the joy of growing local food and the appreciation of beauty, both of which are very much part of their community”.
This community project was made possible through ArtReach, an educational partnership between the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Department of Education. ArtReach supports opportunities to work with, exhibit and celebrate student art across the province and establish connections to the arts in our schools.
