Art BEATs at 2011 Children's Festival

November 17, 2011 – HALIFAX, NS – Children and families in Nova Scotia are invited to the 10th annual, fantastic, gallery-wide Children’s Festival this Sunday, November 20th at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm this year’s theme is ART BEAT. On what is Universal Children’s Day, the Gallery will be packed with art, music, play, studio workshops and much more!

Festival activities will explore the multiple ways music and the sounds and rhythms of nature and our bodies influence creativity. Although it is aimed at children and youth ages 3-15, there are lots of activities for all ages to enjoy.

At 11:00 am the All Nations drummers will be on hand to explore the tradition of the drum – Mother Earth’s heartbeat. They will sing traditional songs and chants from many nations and share their knowledge of the drum with visitors.

The afternoon features the second event in a new Art Gallery of Nova Scotia partnership with Symphony Nova Scotia called Pop Goes the Easel. Starting at 1:30 pm a Symphony Nova Scotia brass quintet will perform and interact with visitors. After the performance there will be a chance for everyone to try out instruments in the Long & McQuade Musical Instrument Petting Zoo.

“The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is thrilled to continue our partnership with Symphony Nova Scotia,” said Ray Cronin, Director and CEO of AGNS. “Music and visual art go together beautifully as we continue to show with our joint programming for our Family Sundays,” he added.

Throughout the day visitors are also encouraged to participate in lots of other arts and crafts activities inspired by art and music. Children can have their caricature drawn; join in painting and instrument-making workshops, engage with the Artists-in-Residence and explore the Gallery with a specially designed Eye-Spy game!

Dale Sheppard, Curator of Education and Public Programs at AGNS said: “Our annual Children’s Festival aims to raise the profile of play and increase the opportunities for play at the Gallery. It’s a great day out with loads of new things to try out. Last year proved to be a great success and we are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to ART BEAT this Sunday.”
