Free admission, public programs Sept 24-26

September 23, 2010 – HALIFAX, NS – The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is proud to join Canada's coast to coast Culture Days celebration the weekend of September 24-26 with free admission and special public programming.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, family programming activities include a pirate-themed scavenger hunt in the Gallery and hands-on art activities in the studios. Everyone is welcome and pre-registration is not required. Admission to the Gallery is free of charge during this Culture Days event.

Visitors will also enjoy a sneak preview of a new project that the Gallery has been working on in conjunction with DHX Media and CBC – an animated children's series in Halifax celebrating creativity and artistic expression. The series, Pirates – Adventures in Art, has young viewers follow the voyages of Captain Leo, Princess Cleo, First Mate Fresco del Gecko, and Chief Bottle Washer Skelly the Skeleton as they escape the clutches of evil Queen Conformia and her henchman, Admiral Krank.

As well as introducing children to the world of art, each episode's subject lends itself to fun follow-up activities for its viewers.

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia provides curriculum consultation for the series and has run 44 art classes specifically related to the themes of each episode. Filmed footage will run during the Gallery's Culture Days studio activities.

Pirates – Adventures in Art launches on CBC in November along with an exciting, collaborative companion website also hosted by CBC.

Culture Days is a weekend-long, interactive celebration of arts and culture taking place nationwide.

This Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Culture Days initiative is sponsored in part by DHX Media.
